Disable the New Google Layout

April 24, 2010

I saw the new Google search results page layout for the first time tonight. I then googled “turn off new google layout”. I suppose I don’t handle change very well. If you hate the new Google layout too, here’s how to fix it:

  1. Go to Google’s Experiment Search page (part of Google Labs) here: http://www.google.com/experimental/
  2. Press the “Join this experiment” button at the top, right-hand corner of the “Keyboard shortcuts” experiment section
  3. Enjoy not seeing Google’s new layout any more on search results
  4. Bonus Points – Enjoy the Keyboard Shortcuts experiment, which is really fantastic. It lets you navigate Google search results with keyboard shortcuts that will feel very natural to fans of Linux terminal apps. (Notably, “j” navigates down, “k” navigates up.) These are also the shortcuts used in Gmail, Google Reader, and the Boston Globe’s “Big Picture” (which is fantastic).
